From May 9 to May 12 in physical and from May 17 to 18 in virtual, the 29th edition of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), the largest travel and tourism exhibition in the Middle East, was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The opportunity to review the event and the importance it has on the effervescence of tourism worldwide and, in particular, in the Middle East.

With 1,500 exhibitors presenting 158 destinations around the world, the show managed to attract 23,000 participants. With tourism expected to grow significantly in the coming years, the show highlighted future global tourism investments and financing strategies.

Tourism regains hope for the coming years

Representatives from many destinations around the world made their way to Dubai to promote their countries. The objective? To offer a real showcase to the different countries that hope to open up to new tourist markets. If some of the countries represented already show a strong tourist influx as Greece, Spain and Germany were present, we could also note the presence of Jamaica, Iraq or Lebanon, less tourist destinations. This was the first time that Jamaica participated in this international event.

The director of the Spanish Tourist Board, Daniel Rosado Bayon, emphasized that this fair was an excellent opportunity to promote national tourism in a global market: “We have incredible experiences that can be done throughout the year and not just in the summer, but throughout the year and throughout the country. We have many different things we can do, from beaches to ski resorts. And we can say that Spain is a world within a country” .

The influx of visitors in this fair, which has seen a growth of 85% compared to the previous edition, is representative of the future strong recovery of tourism worldwide. The tourism sector, the one that has surely been the most impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, has however good prospects for 2024.

Indeed, the International Air Transport Association forecasts 4 billion travelers in 2024, exceeding pre-pandemic levels (+103% in 2024 and +111% in 2025). With this in mind, countries from all over the world have been rushing to the Arabian Travel Market, a hub for the global tourism sector.

After the World Expo 2020, which was held in early 2022 and attracted nearly 23 million visitors, Dubai was able to use the show to promote its future positioning as a preferred destination for tourists worldwide, in a context of post-pandemic recovery. Issam Kazim, Dubai Corporation’s Director General for Tourism, Commerce and Marketing, is hoping for a quick return to the 16 million tourists of 2019, in order to erase the bad years of 2020 and 2021 in terms of tourism (5.5 million and 7.28 million tourists, respectively.

The big travel companies, in large numbers at this show

The theme of this 29th edition of the show was “The future of travel and international tourism”. The opportunity to see many travel companies with the ambition to improve the world of travel.

Among them, we can mention the Dubai-based airline, Emirates, which took advantage of the show to present its new Premium Economy class and the future layout of its Boeing 777s. Qatar Airways announced a partnership with the launch of a codeshare with Virgin Australia. In addition, Saudi Airlines took the opportunity to sign a contract with Dubai Tourism, the Dubai Corporation for Tourism, Commerce and Marketing, to promote tourism in the city and attract travelers to the airline’s extensive network.
