The German manufacturer has just officialized the arrival of the Digital Key for the iPhone. A way to lock, unlock, start your car and much more. BMW will thus become the first car manufacturer to allow its customers to use the iPhone as a fully digital car key, a further sign of the integration of modern mobile technology into vehicles.

At Apple’s worldwide developers’ conference held yesterday, Tuesday, June 23, the American giant made its new CarKey system official, a function that allows you to transform your smartphone into a virtual car key.

And among the first partners to be able to benefit from this new-generation “key”: the Munich-based BMW, which will thus be the first car manufacturer to enjoy the digital key directly integrated into the iPhone. The goal? To enable customers to use their iPhone as a car key without having to use the manufacturer’s application.

A “BMW Digital Key for iPhone” with multiple opportunities

The Digital Key, as BMW calls it, will therefore allow customers to do without physical keys by using their iPhone to lock and unlock their car, but also, and this is the main new feature, to start it.

It will also be possible to share remote access with up to five other people (via iMessage) and define driver profiles. For example, if a young driver wants to drive the car, it will now be possible to set maximum speeds and even limit the volume of the radio.

The phone’s battery breakdown has also been anticipated and a power reserve has been provided to cope with this : The virtual key will work for up to five hours if the iPhone shuts down due to a low battery, giving you greater peace of mind and overcoming the modern fear of “empty battery”.

The BMW application for smartphones will allow this “Digital Key” to be configured and access can be managed from inside the car as well as via the Apple Wallet.

The future key will even be compatible with the Apple Watch, and it seems then that the Swiss watch will also fulfill the functions of a digital key!

A digital key with multiple functionalities therefore, modern and up to date, which has been able to adjust to the new social behaviors and the intensive use of telephones. To the point of putting an end to physical keys?

BMW, one of the main contributors to digital key standardization

The German manufacturer was the first to integrate iPod into its vehicles, the first to offer wireless CarPlay and now the first to introduce support for the BMW digital key securely stored in the Apple Wallet for iPhone.

In fact, the manufacturer was quick to see the potential of smartphones as “Digital Keys” to enhance the user experience, security and compatibility with smartphones, all of which have been key elements of the BMW Group’s strategy since its early days.

That’s why BMW has been working closely with Apple for years to drive forward the implementation of global standards.Version 2.0 of the Digital Key (NFC) was unveiled in May 2020, while the next generation Digital Key using Ultra Broadband technology is already well advanced. At the global conference, BMW and Apple also announced a brand new feature that will allow Apple CarPlay users to adapt routes for electric vehicles on long journeys. The function will take into account charging times and locations.

It will therefore be possible to plan an already “adapted” journey on the iPhone and then transfer it to CarPlay. The idea is that Apple Maps will choose an optimal route based on the autonomy of the electric vehicle and the location of charging stations on the way. This function will initially be available with the 100% electric BMW i4, which will be launched next year.

In the meantime, the Digital Key will be available across a large part of the range, for models manufactured from July 1st 2020 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5 M, X6 M and Z4 series). For the phone, you will need an iPhone XR, XS or newer. There is compatibility with Apple’s Watch Series 5 and higher.
