Paris (awp/afp) – Frenchman Bernard Arnault, CEO of luxury group LVMH, and his family briefly topped the Forbes ranking of the world’s biggest fortunes on Wednesday, with $185 billion, dethroning for a time American Elon Musk, boss of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter.
The 73-year-old French businessman and his family were for a while at the top of this ranking made in real time and available online, because of a decline in the fortune of Elon Musk, due in particular to a sharp decline in the Tesla share Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
But around 17:30 GMT, Elon Musk (with a fortune of 184.9 billion dollars) has returned before Bernard Arnault (184.7 billion). Indian businessman Gautam Adani (134.8 billion), head of a conglomerate, was in third place, while Jeff Bezos (111.3 billion), founder of Amazon, was in fourth place.
Bernard Arnault had already occupied the first place of this ranking for a few hours in May 2021.
The fortune of the French billionaire has benefited recently from the jump in the results of LVMH, the world’s number one luxury company, whose net profit had reached 12 billion euros in 2021.
Elon Musk, whose fortune depends on the evolution of Tesla’s share price, has recently been at the heart of multiple controversies since he bought the social network Twitter.
The other reference ranking, that of the financial agency Bloomberg, places Elon Musk at the top. According to this daily ranking stopped on Tuesday, at the close of Wall Street, the fortune of the American businessman reaches 178.9 billion dollars, ahead of Bernard Arnault (165.1 billion).
