The British carmaker has just announced that it will stop production of its 12-cylinder petrol engine in April 2024 and switch to electric power.
Bentley, the famous luxury car and racing manufacturer founded in 1919, has made a big decision, which will mark a turning point in its history and production. A few days ago, it announced that as of April 2024, it would stop producing its iconic 12-cylinder gasoline engine. And this announcement is likely to disappoint purists, since it is currently the most formidable in its category, with 750 horsepower.
For the past few years, many carmakers have been switching to all-electric or hybrid vehicles to reduce their environmental impact as well as that of their customers. And Bentley is no exception to the rule. The British company has set a goal of producing and marketing its first fully electric cars by 2025. It has also pledged to purge its catalog of combustion models by 2030.
“When production stops, more than 100,000 examples of the iconic W12 engine will have been hand-built at the company’s Dream Factory in Crewe, England, since its launch in 2003,” the group added in a statement.
A successful 2022
The year 2022 was very positive for the automotive sector and particularly for Bentley. The manufacturer has had a record year. For the first time in its history, it sold more than 15,000 vehicles in the space of twelve months, 4% more than the previous year.
These sales were driven in particular by the renewal of its catalog and the increase in demand for customized models. To go even further and beat its new record, Bentley is innovating by going all-electric.
The first step will be the transformation of the factory to adapt to this new requirement. Its historic site, which currently employs 4,000 people across the entire production chain, will undergo radical change. The ambition is to make it the “new benchmark in luxury car manufacturing in terms of sustainable development“.
“Our progressive journey towards sustainable luxury mobility involves changes in all areas of Bentley Motors. When we launched the W12 in 2003, we knew we had a powerful engine that would move our cars and the brand forward at great speed. Twenty years and more than 100,000 W12s later, the time has come to retire this now iconic powertrain as we move toward electrification but give it the best possible send-off, with the most powerful version of the engine ever created,” said Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark.
A little acceleration before the 180-degree turn
Before the calm, the storm. That phrase is apt for the W12 engine, which will bid farewell to the most powerful Bentley in the brand’s history with a new version that’s sure to blow the mind.
The model? The Bentley Batur, manufactured by Mulliner. This coupe will hide under its hood the ultimate W12 twin-turbo with 750 horsepower. New design, new features and innovative functionalities, the lucky ones who will have the audacity and honor to drive it, will start off on a high note.
This model will be the only Bentley to use this ultimate special version of the W12. The brand plans to produce only 18 of them, all of which have already found takers. If you’re interested, you’re coming after the race… The price of these little automotive jewels is close to 2 million euros. Enough to be cooled down, like the engines of the cars at the stop.
