Despite the closure of the Bentley plant during the first lockdown in England, the luxury car manufacturer recorded record sales of 11,206 cars in 2020, thanks in particular to a 48% increase in Chinese demand.

Bentley, now owned by Volkswagen, announced in June that it was cutting 1,000 of the 4,000 jobs it was then providing, in order to save £10 million. The firm has since been able to protect 200 of its jobs, although 800 employees have been made redundant.

However, the difficulties imposed by the health crisis did not prevent Bentley from returning to growth in 2020. “The plant in the north of England did not produce vehicles for seven weeks because restrictions were imposed in March and then ran at half its normal production for the next nine weeks, but the new models helped to increase overall demand,” the carmaker said on Tuesday, January 5.

Indeed, demand increased by 48% in China and 4% in the United States thanks to the popularity of the new Flying Spur. The Bentley Continental GT (24%) and GT Convertible (15%) together accounted for 39% of total sales, ending the year as Bentley’s best-selling model line.

These successes enabled the UK company to offset declines in the Middle East and Europe, where the year 2020 ended with the delivery of 2,193 cars, compared to 2,670 in 2019, a decline of 18%. In the United Kingdom alone, sales were down 22% year-on-year, dropping to 1,160 deliveries.

China, for example, contributed to a 2% increase in total Bentley sales compared to 2019. Following the announcement of the results, Adrian Hallmark, CEO, said, “Although we expected sales to increase before the pandemic struck, considering the level of restrictions around the world for most of the year, achieving record sales performance is a strong measure of our potential.”

The automaker’s potential should be realized in 2021 with the launch of the Bentayga Hybrid, one of nine new models to be introduced this year. In addition, Bentley has stated its intention to become a fully electrified automaker by 2030.

However, not all of these plans are assured, as Adrian Hallmark points out: “As we look ahead to the coming year, we remain cautiously optimistic because much remains uncertain.”
