Bugatti, the luxury car manufacturer, has just announced that its next car model will be hybrid. Another step towards the future, for the company that had not yet ceded to electrification.

For next year, Bugatti has decided to switch to the turbo, or at least go green. Indeed, it was until then one of the only hypercar manufacturers not to have sided with the green side with electrification. But his conviction is quite different for 2024, since the luxury car manufacturer has just announced its first Chiron hybrid.

Chiron, Divo, the Black Car or Centodieci, all these models of the brand have the same engine, the legendary W16 of the German Volkswagen group. But as innovations are moving at a rapid pace in the automotive industry, 2024 means change for the Franco-Italian firm.

A bold green change

Known for its legendary cars, with an unparalleled design and dazzling engine, Bugatti is set to abandon the 100% thermal, with the successor of the legendary Bugatti Chiron. Economic or ecological issue? In any case, this new automobile jewel will represent a major transformation for the brand. It will go from its famous W16 engine to a V8 hybrid configuration. The latter has also come out of its development phase and will soon enter production.

Achim Anscheidt, the brand’s design director for nearly 20 years, says that this decision to change has been well thought out and that this transition to the hybrid is not taken lightly: “It was more a reflection exercise, especially from the inside. I wanted to make sure that everything I’ve learned and understood over the last 19 years at Bugatti, this whole experience, has an impact on the development of the car“.

A new model arriving at high speed

Even if Bugatti leaves room for transformation, it does not mean that it will sacrifice the DNA of the Chiron model. The future hypercar will retain the classic design elements that have become the symbol of the brand, such as the iconic horseshoe grille.

The car will nevertheless be built around a new chassis and should be lighter. The integration of the hybrid component’s batteries required a reassessment of the overall architecture of the car, according to Frank Heyl, the brand’s new design director.

The interior should also be similar to previous models, with the only difference that it will have a central screen, for infotainment purposes.

Renowned for building luxury cars at exorbitant prices, Bugatti has put the price on the future hybrid vehicle. It is expected to exceed five million dollars of the limited edition Mistral, the latest model of the W16 engine, produced in only 99 copies. This car will be presented for the first time next year, with a production start in 2026.

After electric scooters, Bugatti switched to hybrid for its cars. Next step, the 100% electric?
