The sums raised at the auction of Muhammad Ali’s drawings held Tuesday in New York reached record highs. Some of these little-known works of art exceeded the auctioneers’ estimates.
The auctioneers said that during the auction, 26 works by Muhammad Ali sold for a total of $945,524, more than three times the low estimate. One of the most sought-after drawings was a 1978 sketch of a boxing match entitled “Sting Like a Bee“, which was estimated to fetch between $40,000 and $60,000. According to Bonhams, the auction house, this piece was acquired by a British collector. For the other sales, the buyers were not identified.
Ali’s passion for art was little known, but he liked to draw to relax after a fight or training. It was a way for him to convey messages about his political and religious views. Some of the works offered for sale were traditional natural paintings, while others were more personal sketches, almost cartoon-like.
A red, white and blue canvas painting from 1979, inscribed with the words “I Love You America”, sold for $150,000, while a felt-tip sketch from 1967 comparing Islam to Christianity sold for $24,000.
The paintings and drawings offered for sale were from the collection of Rodney Hilton Brown, who worked with Ali on his art.
The former world heavyweight champion died in 2016 at the age of 74 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
