Aston Martin presents its new model

British luxury carmaker Aston Martin presented its new model last weekend. Heir to the DB11, the DB12 does not claim to be revolutionary. To equip James Bond’s favorite brand of car, the decision was made to forgo the V12 engine in favor of the Mercedes-AMG V8.

 

After the 2016 Aston Martin DB11, here comes the 2023 Aston Martin DB12. Presented at last weekend’s Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix, the DB12 is the first model in a series of six to come within two years.

 

The car’s lines are in keeping with the previous model, but the grille is more aggressive. The great novelty of this luxury sedan is the absence of the V12 engine under the hood, which made the last models roar. Instead, the body now houses a twin-turbocharged 4-liter V8 engine from Mercedes-AMG. This is a slightly “deflated” version of the DBX 707’s engine, yet the brand claims that performance has been further enhanced. It is said to reach 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, compared with 4.1 seconds previously.

 

 

The block delivers 585 hp at 6,000 rpm and 800 Nm of torque between 2,750 and 6,000 rpm. Top speed also increases, to 325 km/h. The V8 continues to be mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Finally, the vehicle’s weight is 1.68 tonnes, according to the technical data sheet.

 

Chassis and interior reworked

 

Although the DB12 clearly inherits the codes of the DB11, Aston Martin has declared that 80% of its components are new. The interior has been completely redesigned. The Command APS interface, inherited from previous Mercedes models and not very ergonomic, has been removed. It has been replaced by a new dashboard and a raised, touch-sensitive center console. The dashboard features a fully customizable digital display, allowing the needle dials to be retained.

 

 

The new model also features a completely redesigned chassis, strengthened by 7%, while maintaining classic rear-wheel drive. The new feature is an E-Diff electronic rear differential, but this would have difficulty compensating for the absence of rear-wheel steering.

 

 

More of an evolution than a revolution, the Aston Martin DB12 delivers a satisfactory, if unremarkable, copy. Thanks to its shorter engine block, the car could be adapted for electric hybridization. The British brand’s Chinese partner Geely, a specialist in this field, will certainly be able to advise on this evolution towards electrification. Geely has just increased its stake in Aston Martin to 17%.

 

The DB12 is scheduled for launch in the third quarter of 2023. By then, Aston Martin will have presented at least one other model.
