Back this year, Art Basel, Miami’s modern and contemporary art fair, brings together artists from 5 continents and relies on the return of American collectors.

Art Basel Miami features important works by masters of modern and contemporary art, as well as the new generation of emerging stars. Last year, due to the global pandemic, the show was replaced by an online viewing room.

Now Art Basel returns to the Miami Beach Convention Center, December 2-4, with 253 galleries from 36 countries and territories. Marc Spiegler, global director of Art Basel, said he expects a strong turnout this week. “Americans were scarce on the ground at fairs in Europe this fall. And we expect them all to show up in Miami.

43 of the galleries are appearing at the fair for the very first time. Organizers have relaxed some of the requirements for dealers applying to participate, including gallery seniority. As a result, according to Spiegler, there is “a more diverse group of gallerists than in the past.

A new gallery participating in Art Basel for the first time, Pequod Co. of Mexico City, was founded by Mau Galguera and his wife, María García Sainz, in February 2020. They started with digital content and opened a physical space in June of that year. “This is our first participation in an international art fair and it’s an important moment for us,” Galguera said.

Gagosian Gallery has already sold about 30 works for more than $10 million, including paintings by Mary Weatherford, Albert Oehlen and Titus Kaphar. “It feels good,” Larry Gagosian told Artnet News as he presided over the booth. “I like seeing friends come by. And we do business.
