During an episode of the “Sway” podcast published on Monday in an interview with the New York Times, Tim Cook spoke about the company’s efforts in the field of electric vehicles and recalled that the Californian group “is exploring many things internally”. However, the CEO did not want to confirm any project in this area and did not provide further details.
“Autonomy itself is a basic technology, in my opinion. If you take a step back, the car, in many ways, is a robot. An autonomous car is a robot. So there are a lot of things you can do with autonomy. And we’ll see what Apple does. he said. “We investigate so many things internally. Many of them never see the light of day. I’m not saying that any of them won’t.”
“We like to integrate hardware, software and services, and find the intersections of those things, because we think that’s where the magic happens. And so that’s what we like to do. And we like to own the primary technology that goes with it.”
Since 2014, Apple has been working on an autonomous car, through ‘Project Titan’, which was handed over to Doug Field, former head of engineering at Tesla, in 2018.
By the end of that year, the department had 5,000 employees. In 2019, Apple acquired autonomous driving startup Drive.ai as part of a restructuring of Project Titan.
Last December, Reuters reported that Apple was developing a “single-cell” battery design that could significantly reduce battery costs and increase vehicle range. The news agency also confirmed that the project would come to fruition by 2024.
Over the past seven years, little information has been shared, but many rumours have emerged. One of these was the possibility that Apple would work with car manufacturers to implement the project.
