A new complaint has just been filed against the fashion designer by another member of the New York fashion community.
The New York-based designer had already received a series of allegations of sexual assault in late 2020.
Model Owen Mooney was the source of a TikTok post in which he accused Alexander Wang of groping him in a New York club in 2017. He brought with him a wave of similar allegations all against Wang.
Most of these were submitted anonymously and shared through @shitmodelmanagement, an Instagram account dedicated to exposing alleged assaults in the fashion industry.
These allegations were then amplified by the Instagram Diet Prada account.
Discussions on the subject had since largely calmed down. Alexandre Wang fiercely dismissed the allegations as “unfounded” and “preposterous” in a New Year’s Eve statement and then sought legal representation.
Meanwhile, Lisa Bloom, a prominent victim’s lawyer, took charge of all these allegations against Alexander Wang.
“… I am no longer anonymous !”
The accusers have all chosen to remain anonymous. Except for David Casavant, fashion designer and archivist, and a well-known member of New York’s fashion community.
Speaking to the New York Times, he alleged that Wang took off his pants and underwear during a meeting with the designer at a Brooklyn nightclub in January 2017.
The details he provides echo those of the other accusers expressed in public. In this case those of Gia Garrison, a model, who reported in a recent article published in The Guardian, in which she recounts a similar incident that took place in February of the same year.
David’s decision to go public was partly motivated by the lack of an urgent response from fashion industry leaders, “which I can understand,” he says: “I understand, the allegations were mostly anonymous, so that’s fine. But here I am. I’m sitting in front of you. I say who I am. I’m no longer anonymous.”
The indifference of the leaders to the cries of alarm from the victims
David’s testimony draws attention to a hard truth about “the fashion industry’s calmness in the face of so many claims,” says Kelly Cutrone, a fashion advertiser.
She goes on to remind us of our collective responsibility to listen to victims to ensure that perpetrators in the fashion industry are held accountable for their actions.
