Last March, the Accor group inaugurated the Mondrian Hotel in Cannes on the former Palace Grand Hotel site. This is the very first European destination for the brand of the luxury & lifestyle division of the hotel group… Like the air of Sunset Boulevard just a stone’s throw from the Palais des Festivals.
The renovated Grand Hotel
With 75 rooms, the Mondrian Cannes is the smallest hotel on the Croisette. It is also the one that dominates the famous boulevard, with its 11 floors.
The establishment is in place of the city’s first palace, the Grand Hotel, inaugurated in 1863. Destroyed and then rebuilt in the 1960s, it remained the property of the Veyrac family for a long time.
Reopened last March, the hotel has just undergone extensive renovation work. These have enabled the former Grand Hotel to gain in luminosity and space.
The work was spread over twelve months, divided into two six-month phases.
“We’re bringing ourselves up to date. This renovation is bringing us up to date,” says Hugues Raybaud, general manager of the hotel since 1996.
The first stage consisted of redoing all the rooms starting in September 2021. The rooms have changed from their 1970s decor to a more Mediterranean style, with a “vacation hotel” feel.
All rooms have balconies and are also more spacious, with a minimum surface area of 35 square meters.
On the top floor, two 60 square meter suites overlook the bay of Cannes. Each one has a double-height ceiling and a large terrace. In addition, two panoramic rooms are equipped with bathrooms with a sea view, Jacuzzi, and a mini botanical garden.
The second stage, which began a year later, involved renovating the common areas, namely the lobby, the dining areas, and the terrace. The lobby was given a lounge bar and numerous works of art. The new decor, which features natural materials such as wood, leather, marble, and plant fibers, is the work of the French-Brazilian architectural firm Triptyque.
Another new feature is that the Mondrian Cannes now has two dining areas. Mr. Nakamoto’s gourmet table offers a fusion cuisine that combines French and Japanese inspiration, orchestrated by chef Alex Craciun. The restaurant and bar overlook a private garden of about 4000 m².
Meanwhile, Hyde Beach, right on the beach, offers generous Italian cuisine with Gordon Ramsay disciple Gabriele Faiella.
“The place has gained a warm atmosphere with a touch of Riviera elegance. Having only 75 rooms and suites facilitates the extensive personalization of service,” says the hotel’s general manager.
A total of 20 million euros was injected to transform this iconic 5-star hotel with its private beach into a veritable oasis on the Croisette, under the Mondrian brand, via a management contract.
Mondrian breaks through in Europe
As the Accor Group passed the symbolic 3,000 hotel mark in Europe in 2020, it took the opportunity to develop Mondrian, its 26th brand, in the same year.
The brand started in the United States, with its first establishments in Los Angeles, Miami, and New York, as well as in Doha (Qatar). Since then, it has also been set up in Seoul, the Shoreditch district of London, and now in Cannes.
Mondrian joined the Accor group via the acquisition in October 2018 of 50% of the capital of the American company sbe Entertainment Group, founded in 2002.
The group aims to strengthen its European presence in the luxury and lifestyle segment with Mondrian. This ambition was born in 2016 with the acquisition of the Fairmont, Raffles, and Swissôtel brands.
The group wants to target a younger, high-powered clientele to make the customer experience Mondrian’s differentiating element. This includes new social spaces with a robust design, such as the lounge bar. This strategy is still very popular with luxury retailers.
As the group’s website indicates, the aim is to give customers an accurate “modern fairy tale, with culture as well”.
Mondrian is the high-end counterpart to Mama Shelter, the Trigano family’s hotel brand that focuses on restaurant spaces and has been part of the Accor group since 2014.
Mondrian is part of Ennismore, one of the flagships of the Accor group’s Luxury & Lifestyle division, alongside Raffles & Orient Express, Fairmont, and Sofitel. This division was created following the reorganization of the Accor group last January.
Ennismore, a stand-alone entity, was created as a joint venture between Accor and Sbe Entertainment Group in 2021 and currently comprises 14 brands and 101 hotels.
According to its website, until the opening of its new address in Cannes, Mondrian had seven hotels in four countries, with a total of 1,444 rooms.
The brand also has a dozen properties under development, particularly in Bordeaux and the Australian Gold Coast.
A second Mondrian is planned for 2024 in France, in Bordeaux. The establishment will have 97 rooms spread over three floors. It will also feature a restaurant and a 460-square-meter lounge bar, a spa, a meeting space, and a 225-square-meter open-air patio.
The group expects to double the presence of the Mondrian brand by 2023.
The Croisette gets a makeover
The emblematic boulevard of Cannes continues its muse, begun, since 2017, with the resurfacing of its beaches.
The reopening of the Hotel Mondrian is part of the ongoing renovation of the Croisette, driven by the municipality. The second step is to modernize the 22 hotels along the beach at a cost of millions.
Long before the Mondrian, the other legendary hotels in the area were given a facelift, including the Majestic (10 million euros), the JW Marriott (70 million euros), and the Martinez (150 million euros). But none of them managed to compete with the sum paid by the Carlton: 350 million euros. In the wake of the Mondrian, this 110-year-old lady with a Belle-Époque façade, the Carlton, has reopened its doors. Managed by the Ritz-Carlton group, the 332-room and suite hotel – 72 of which have balconies – has the largest infinity pool in Cannes.
The hotels are not the only ones to benefit from large-scale work.
The former Palm Beach Casino inaugurated 90 years ago, is to give way in the spring of 2024 to “a luxury entertainment center, unique in the Mediterranean basin,“ according to the instigator of the project and head of Cannes Balneaire, Patrick Tartary.
For this figure of the Cannes nightlife, who was behind the organization of the crazy evenings of the Palais Club and the Gotha, it is a question of addressing a wealthy clientele accustomed to taking their summer quarters in Saint-Tropez, Mykonos, and Porto Cervo (Sardinia).
While the casino on the tip of the Croisette – managed by the Partouche group – has been transferred to a modern hotel in the city center (the 3.14), the old gaming rooms will be replaced by no less than 9 gourmet restaurants (including Zuma and Nusr-Et).
In addition, there are 16 luxury boutiques (open until 2:30 am), a nightclub (the Palm Club), a spa, a fitness area, a private beach, an event room of 1000 m², or a swimming pool exclusively reserved for club members.
The final stage of the city’s renovation plan, the promenade – immortalized in Alain Berberian’s film City of Fear (1994) – will also undergo significant beautification work from January 2024 for delivery in 2025. To this end, Cannes has called upon the “Atelier d’Urbanité” Roland Castro and the international architecture agency Snøhetta. They have already worked on major projects such as Times Square in New York, the seafront in Thessaloniki, Greece, and the National Opera House in Oslo, Norway.
All of these projects will contribute to strengthening the prestige of the city, whose famous international film festival contributes – over two weeks – 10 to 15% of the annual turnover of certain hotels (2018).
The Cannes Festival represents 140,000 tourists – a tripling of the seaside city’s population – and nearly 200 million euros of spin-offs for the local economy (2022).
