Christian Louboutin started a campaign on 15 June with Sabrina and Idris Elba around solidarity and equality for all. However, a controversy has recently arisen due to a Facebook post made by Assa Traoré in relation with this campaign.
The “Walk a mile in my shoes” campaign was inspired by “the involvement in this fight for justice, equality and freedom of great men such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela” , says Louboutin in a statement. Indeed, “walk a mile in my shoes” was one of Martin Luther King’s famous phrases.

This campaign also comes naturally after the “Black Lives Matter” movement, which emerged in May 2020, fighting against racial discrimination and police violence.
The Elba couple, having previously been victims of discrimination, joined Louboutin in this campaign, as they both share common values such as openness to the world and solidarity.
However, a controversy arose on Facebook on 16 June, regarding a publication made by Assa Traoré. The sister of Adama Traoré – who died in troubled circumstances as a result of police intervention – has since been fighting in the association “La Vérité pour Adama” (The Truth for Adama), in order to find out the truth about the death of her brother. She was also a key player in the “Black Lives Matter” protests in France.
“I warmly thank you for the honour you are giving me by associating me with your campaign for equality and justice for all, by engaging your prestigious brand Louboutin” she declared in this publication.
This post provoked strong reactions from Internet users: “Your noble fight does not need to be advertised by big brands“, was written underneath it.
While some people did not understand why a luxury brand should be associated with a cause that targets police violence, others were surprised to see her associate herself with the Elba couple, knowing that Louboutin had not made any statement about it.
Indeed, following this message published by Assa Traoré, Christian Louboutin was keen to clarify the situation, stating yesterday, June 17, that the campaign had no other faces than those of the couple Elba and Christian Louboutin: “Assa Traoré is not an ambassador of the brand. Nor are the 200 or so people around the world who have been given a shoe, a T-shirt, a letter written by Christian Louboutin, Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina. With all due respect to these people, we did not consider any of them to be “muse”. The Walk a Mile in My Shoes campaign has no faces other than those of its three creators. It has been enriched by singular points of view that bring their support to a global cause and allow, thanks to their fame or expertise, to give visibility to an initiative whose sole purpose is to support these five charities” .
Indeed, the personalities singled out by the famous shoe manufacturer were chosen for “their personal situations, their life paths, their careers or their commitments”. Among them are the football player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the French painter Johanna Tordjman and the British actress Cynthia Erivo.
A confusion, therefore, between the message and the muses of the Louboutin campaign, and the role of Assa Traoré – among others – in the campaign. Although Assa Traoré was indeed contacted by Louboutin, it was only to relay the “Walk a mile in my shoes” campaign.
