The Brussels Motor Show, which opened its doors on Saturday, January 14, is celebrating its centenary in the most ambitious way. No less than 50 brands are represented and important new products are revealed, which will delight car lovers after a Parisian edition in 2022 that was considered dull.

After a two-year absence caused by the pandemic, the Brussels Motor Show is looking to celebrate its 100th anniversary in style. Having opened its doors on Saturday, January 14 and open to the public until Sunday, January 22, the usually annual show has deployed all its means to honor the thousands of car fans expected for the occasion. The show is held in the Brussels Expo at the Heysel Palace, a smaller venue than its European cousins. However, the Belgian Federation of the Automobile and Cycle Industry (FEBIAC), responsible for the organization of the show, was keen to reassure its visitors by saying that the exhibitors would be present in large numbers and that they would not come empty-handed. As a result, some 68,000 visitors were registered on the first day.

For decades, the Paris, Geneva and Frankfurt fairs were the most important fairs in Europe, if not the world.  Frankfurt has been replaced by Munich and Geneva by Doha. And the only remaining show among these tenors is the Paris Motor Show, whose last version in 2022 was rather dull, due to the absence of many brands. Today, specialists agree that the major annual motor shows are, in chronological order, Detroit in the United States (January), Geneva in Switzerland (March), Turin in Italy (April), Paris or Frankfurt in France and Germany (October) and Tokyo in Japan (December). Due to the high costs of organization, some shows are now held only every two years, such as those in Paris and Frankfurt, which are held alternately.

So the “small” Brussels show could well be a success with a very ambitious 2023 edition: 55 brands are represented and they are revealing important new products.

A successful centenary

The Brussels Motor Show is well attended with many brands of cars and the quality is there.

On the Volkswagen Group side, all the prestigious brands made the trip:  Porsche with its recent 911 GT3, RSBentley with its Flying Spur S while Lamborghini presents the impressive Huracan Sterrato and Bugatti its copy of the Chiron Sport. The big absentees are Ferrari, Volvo and Rolls Royce, the brand of the BMW group. But the Italians are represented by Maserati, while the British Aston Martin DBX 707 and the McLaren Artura are also on display.

Two evening events open to all are also planned for Monday, January 16 and Friday, January 20 until 10 pm to discover electric vehicles and the latest technological innovations of manufacturers, without forgetting the eSport, e-gaming with simulation games and an exhibition dedicated to F1 and dream cars.

For the first time, the election of the Car of the Year, which will crown the best vehicle launched on the European market since 1964, will take place at the Brussels Motor Show, reflecting its growing international impact. Until now, the award has been presented in Geneva, like the Kia EV6 in 2022. This year’s nominees are the Jeep Avenger, Kia Niro, Nissan Ariya, Peugeot 408, Renault Austral, Subaru Solterra/Toyota bZ4X and Volkswagen ID.Buzz.

With an ambitious program, the Brussels Motor Show is currently celebrating a centenary worthy of the name.
