British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood died on Thursday, December 29, at the age of 81, announced on Twitter the brand she founded. She died “peacefully” surrounded by her family in south London.
The designer’s career began in the 1970s at the height of the punk movement, while her radical approach to “street style” turned the world upside down. It was the beginning of a long career marked by several triumphant shows in London, Paris, Milan and New York.
As her influence grew, she seemed to transcend fashion with designs exhibited in museums around the world. The young woman who had scorned the British establishment eventually became one of its leading figures.
In addition, Vivienne Westwood has also helped to stir the world of music. The Sex Pistols, architects of the British punk movement, formed in her London clothing store – “SEX” – under the direction of their manager Malcolm McLaren, Vivienne Westwood’s husband.
