The year 2022 was a good one. Between the anniversaries of iconic models and unexpected releases, here is a look at the most beautiful watchmaking surprises of 2022.

Audemars Piguet

This year marked the 50th anniversary of a brand icon, the Royal Oak. For the first part of the celebrations of its icon, the brand returned to the essence of this legendary watch designed by Gérald Genta. While they all bear on their reverse side an oscillating weight engraved with the colours of the event, Royal Oak watches are available in a multitude of variations of colours, complications and delicate skeletonisation.  To mark this anniversary, Audemars Piguet has launched a revisited collection with new in-house movements and slightly modified designs, colours and dial motifs.

Omega x Swatch

A well-kept secret came to light this year. At the beginning of March, the first collaboration between the two sister manufactures, Swatch and Omega, caused a stir. While the iconic curves of Omega’s flagship watch are no longer in evidence, this time the Speedmaster Moonwatch features the new material unveiled by Swatch a year ago, bioceramic. The Swatch x Omega collaboration is thus setting out to conquer space with 10 models named after planets (Mercury, Pluto, etc.) and equipped with a quartz movement. Available only in a selection of Swatch boutiques, at a price of 250 euros, these timepieces are selling like hotcakes to the lucky few who have braved the queues.

Bvlgari

The year 2022 also marked the 10th anniversary of Bvlgari’s Octo Finissimo collection, its record-breaking line of timepieces. To honour this important milestone, the brand unveiled anniversary editions: the “Sketch” limited editions of the Octo Finissimo and the standard Octo Finissimo Chronograph in titanium, whose dials are reminiscent of a pencil sketch, recall the genesis of these models. Bvlgari also unveiled two versions in pink gold with brown dials.

Tudor

In the family of anniversaries, I ask for Tudor! Tudor’s Black Bay line also celebrated its tenth anniversary. And even if they didn’t present a special model for the occasion, the brand impressed with a series of novelties. First of all, the Black Bay Pro, a GMT watch with a stainless steel bezel, is clearly inspired by the famous first generation Rolex Explorer II from the 70s. However, Tudor has infused its own style into the dial design and equipped the watch with the MT5652 manufacture calibre.

H. Moser et Cie

After the all-steel model, H. Moser & Cie. has now dressed its Streamliner model in red gold. In a play of contrasts, the Swiss watch brand distils the essence of the tourbillon, a traditional fine watchmaking mechanism, by combining it with Vantablack®, an innovative coating derived from the aeronautics industry. Sleek, ultra-contemporary and timeless, the House is very much in vogue this year among timepiece collectors in search of independent watchmakers.
