Jacob & Co celebrates the 50th anniversary of The Godfather with an exclusive model

Watchmaker Jacob & Co is paying tribute to “The Godfather” movie, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its release this year. The New York-based company has just presented its brand new triple-axis watch dedicated to the film, in one of its filming locations, in Sicily.

It was on the Isle of Three Points that the brand’s CEO, Benjamin Arabov, in the presence of Jacob Arabo and one of The Godfather’s leading actors, Gianni Russo, paid tribute to the most famous gangster movie of all time. A reception was held at one of its iconic filming locations, Michael Corleone’s home, which has remained untouched since the film was shot in 1971.

In honor of this cinematic masterpiece, which has not aged a bit despite its half-century, Jacob & Co presented the new version of its iconic triple-axis tourbillon watch. The Opera Godfather 50th anniversary is a limited series of 50 models, which brings together the entire film in one small dial. With the spectacular reminder of the film through various miniaturized elements such as the rose, or via the music box animated with its soundtrack, integrated into the watch, the latter is unique in its kind.

The Godfather is not only a great film because of the way it was shot and directed. It also contains some of the greatest scenes and dialogue in the history of cinema,” says Benjamin Arabov.

This timepiece is a true gem of craftsmanship. It is housed in a 49mm white gold case, the sides of which are decorated with thirteen iconic scenes, in the same narrative order as the film. Each scene is engraved on the case using a revolutionary femtolaser technology, which allows for an unparalleled level of realism.

In the center of the dial, the iconic red Godfather rose rests between the musical barrels, crafted from solid gold, that power the music box mechanism. Finally, housed in the watch face, despite its small size, is also the famous piano that bears the image of Don Corleone as well as the strings of the puppeteer from the original poster.

More than just a watch, it is an object that oscillates between craftsmanship, watchmaking and personal and symbolic homage. A dial that reads like a book, even if its miniature format restricts it somewhat, regrets Ben Arabov: “The only problem is that it doesn’t have as many ‘pages’ as Jacob & Co. would have liked. From the beginning, I wanted to go further, to celebrate the importance of this film by showing actual scenes.” The executive wanted a literal tribute to everything the film represents, “But there’s so little space. The whole piece is filled with components, details and symbols. So, for the 50th anniversary of The Godfather, I came up with the idea of inscribing key moments from the film on the case, which looked like a canvas waiting to be animated.”

The Godfather 50th Anniversary Opera has a special place in the Jacob & Co collections. Its unique, innovative and emotional position is reinforced by the package built around the model. Each of the 50 models of the limited series is delivered in a wooden box, lined with red velvet inside, yet another nod to the cinematic masterpiece. It contains a crystal decanter and a new version of the Godfather fountain pen.

The final symbol of the film is not housed in the watch, but in time and space. The launch featured a large-scale event in Sicily with VIP guests from around the world, walking in the footsteps of Coppola and his crew at one of the film’s iconic locations.
