The Dinh Van jewelry house says goodbye to its founder

The designer Jean Dinh Van passed away last Saturday night at the age of 94.

The jeweler Jean Dinh Van, founder of the jewelry brand Dinh Van died last weekend, following a stroke, his wife told AFP. She added that a ceremony would be organized in Boulogne-Billancourt, where he was born in 1927.

Jean Dinh Van, Breton of Vietnamese origin by his father, had trained at the jeweler Cartier before opening his first store in Paris in 1965. The house was the first to introduce minimalism in jewelry. The founder has succeeded in infusing the brand with a desire to shake up the codes of “classic” jewelry by drawing inspiration from everyday details and objects.

Jean Dinh Van’s approach was to “offer a modern luxury, a jewelry to be worn on a daily basis“, says the brand to explain the fame of its founder. He was inspired by many objects such as razor blades, cufflinks or handcuffs, which he liked to divert to make jewelry, now cult.

In 1998, Jean Dinh Van sold his company to Yves Mouriès, the CEO of Aigle SA and Eric Laporte. Since then, Dinh Van stores have flourished and the brand has expanded internationally. “At that time, the world of fashion, furniture and architecture was in full revolution, new signatures had appeared, and in jewelry: nothing! I wanted to bring jewelry to the street. Women were beginning to emancipate themselves and I wanted them to be able to buy their own rings and bracelets,” explained Jean Dinh Van to Le Temps magazine in 2006.
