Tesla is set to recall 53,822 US vehicles equipped with fully autonomous driving, in order to disable a feature. The latter could lead to safety concerns, such as traffic accidents.
Last October, Tesla developed two new features for vehicles equipped with the Full Self Driving (FSD) beta : Rolling Stop. This feature can prevent the electric vehicle from stopping at stop signs under certain conditions. With this option, the car can be driven at a speed of up to 9 km/h without stopping at a stop sign.
This feature is contrary to traffic laws, as states require vehicles to come to a complete stop at intersections, including a “Stop” sign. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla will perform an over-the-air (OTA) software update to disable the “Rolling Stop.
NHTSA said the recall affects the following vehicle models : Model S and Model X from 2016 to 2022, Model 3 from 2017 to 2022 and Model Y from 2020 to 2022.
However, Tesla claims that this option has not yet caused any accidents, although the brand agrees to disable it.
