Reporting to Burkhart Grund, Chief Finance Officer, Bérangère Ruchat assumed her new role as Chief Sustainability Officer at Richemont on 1 February 2022.

Building on Richemont‘s track record in ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) reporting and its commitment to scientific goals, Dr. Bérangère Ruchat will bring – to this newly created position – her deep expertise in sustainability and her experience in collaborating to develop the group’s vision and strengthen its ambitions.

Ms. Ruchat comes from the Firmenich Group (a Swiss fragrance and flavor creation company) where she was Chief Sustainability Officer and, more recently, Senior Vice President Sustainability. During her 12 years of service, Ms. Ruchat established unique partnerships, led Firmenich’s sustainability strategy and directed the group’s ESG reporting.

Previously, she served as Director of Partnerships for the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) from 2004, after leading the Partners in Action program at the United Nations System Staff College, which she joined in 2000.

Bérangère Ruchat was recognized by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development Leading Women Awards for her work promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in 2016. She also received the Ethical Corporation Chief Sustainability Officer of the Year Award in 2015.

Major challenge – green growth

The group is pursuing a “green growth” program that aims to increase profitability while reducing its carbon footprint, and is striving for circularity in procurement and sales. The company, which owns brands such as Cartier, Chloé, IWC and Yoox Net-a-porter Group, talks about its ESG achievements in its 2021 sustainability report “Movement for Better Luxury,” which will be released on July 14.

Richemont currently commits to a 46 percent reduction in absolute Category 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, compared to the 2019 baseline. It also commits to reducing Tier 3 greenhouse gas emissions from “purchased goods and services and business travel” by 55% per dollar of profit by 2030.

Matthew Kilgarriff, group director of corporate social responsibility and environment, said Richemont has not set a date to achieve 100 percent carbon neutrality, adding that it is currently working with brands to determine what full carbon neutrality (without offsets) looks like. “We are focused on reducing the carbon intensity – and eliminating carbon – in our supply chains, and we are still looking at when and how we will achieve net zero carbon,” he added.
