Cognac sales have jumped by nearly 31% in value and 16.2% in volume in 2021, exceeding their pre-pandemic level.

Indeed, in its report, the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC) indicated that sales of this alcohol reached a sum of 3.6 billion euros (4.1 billion dollars) in 2021.

In terms of volume, 223.2 million bottles were shipped during the year, also up 1.6% on 2019.

By comparison, Cognac sales were down to 22.3% in value terms in 2020, with the pandemic being the major cause of this decline. The pandemic favoured internet sales, a market where cheaper bottles dominate.

Cognac remains marked by a very strong dynamic. Demand has never been as high on our markets as it has been this year” , declared the president of the BNIC, Christophe Véral. “This growth reflects a real recovery of cognac, as well as new consumption habits”, he continued.

The dominant markets, factors of this growth

As the leading export market, cognac sales in the United States rose by 11% in 2021, equivalent to 115 million bottles sold.

In its second largest market, China, sales have jumped by 56% with 34 million bottles shipped. Finally, European sales of cognac have increased by 8% to reach 37.1 million bottles sold.

In France, cognac is also well performing in 2021, with a 23.4% increase in sales compared to 2020.

According to the interprofession, the 2021 harvest is in line with the ten-year average, with 867,312 hectoliters of pure alcohol produced, and should support a “continued growth” in the sector, the BNIC said.
