Sri Lankan authorities have unveiled the world’s largest sapphire, weighing 310 kilograms. The presentation took place in the town of Horana, not far from Colombo, Sri Lanka’s largest city, in the house of one of the owners of the quarry where the sapphire was found.
At the presentation of the gemstone, Buddhist monks were present and chanted around the sapphire and the quarry owner. The Buddhist monks blessed the stone before it was unveiled to the public.
Sri Lankan experts said the gem was one of the rarest in the world, weighing 310 kilograms, 1.6 million carats and worth more than 100 million euros. However, international organisations have yet to certify it.
The gemstone was found in a quarry near the town of Rattnapura, ‘the city of gems’. It was also in this town that the largest deposit of star sapphire was found in a garden.
The geological conditions in Sri Lanka are conducive to the development of gemstones thanks to its soil, especially for sapphire. Indeed, it was in Sri Lanka that the largest sapphire, weighing 1,400 carats, was discovered.
