The 2021 winners of the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix were unveiled on Thursday 4 November at a festive prize-giving ceremony to mark the event’s 20th anniversary. It was Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo watch that received the Aiguille d’Or, the most prestigious award.
Conducted by Edouard Baer, the award ceremony for the 2021 edition of the GPHG honoured contemporary watchmaking excellence and creativity. 19 prizes were awarded by the thirty-member jury chaired by Nick Foulkes, British historian, author and journalist.
The Aiguille d’Or, the supreme award, went to Bulgari for the Octo Finissimo watch. This is the first time an Italian brand has won this award. “I am very moved tonight and the whole Bulgari team, because it is one of our mechanical watches that has won this prize, it is the consecration of several years of work“, said Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of Bulgari.
Other awards include Piaget, which received the ladies’ watch award for the Limelight Gala Precious Rainbow, Grand Seiko for the men’s watch award for the calibre 9SA5 -Hi-Beat 36000, and Audemars Piguet, which received the iconic watch award for the Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Plat. Louis Vuitton, Tudor and Chopard are also among the brands rewarded and praised by the jury and the GPHG Academy for the quality of their creations in various other categories.
“Even though there were strong competitors, I think it was the form, the gold work of the Limelight that allowed us to win,” said Benjamin Comard, CEO of Piaget.
The Jury’s Special Prize, which rewards a personality or an institution that stands out in the watchmaking world, was awarded this year to Dubai Watch Week. “We are very honoured to receive this award, which I dedicate to the whole team who work very hard to make sure that Dubai Watch Week can be held in the best possible way,” shared Hind Seddiqi, Managing Director of Dubai Watch Week.
The eighteen winners of this year’s prize are on display at the Musée Rath in Geneva until 14 November 2021, among the twenty watches that won the Grand Prix de l’Aiguille d’Or from 2001 to 2020. The 2021 winning watches will then be presented during Dubai Watch Week, from 24 to 28 November, and then in Paris from 2 to 5 December.
