As the Tax Free World Association (TFWA) held its exhibition between 24 and 28 October, new trends are emerging in the travel retail market, driven by a desire for change and adaptation in the wake of the recent pandemic.
The TFWA Exhibition & Conference 2021, the trade show dedicated to duty free and travel retail, was held at the end of October in the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, southern France.
This event brought together the biggest players in the market, brands and industry partners from all over the world for several days. More than a hundred major brands registered to exhibit, including Chanel, L’Oréal and Lacoste.
But this event is also an opportunity for the travel retail sector to discuss, share, and therefore better prepare to envisage the future. For the arrival of Covid has caused many losses in a sector where growth was assured, guaranteed by all observers, with a value approaching 5% per year for the next fifty years. Overnight, the disappearance of tourists has taken its toll, and although they are increasingly coming back, the sector is still struggling.
The TFWA Exhibition & Conference 2021 was therefore an opportunity to take stock of the situation as well as the solutions for rebounding. However, most of the major travel retail brands did not wait for this event to adapt. Many have turned to click & collect and online sales. Travellers could see online where the products they wanted were available. Dufry, Heinemann and Lagardère, for example, made this choice.
Similarly, travel shops are increasingly relying on technology to draw customers into the shop and keep them engaged throughout their journey, while providing a seamless shopping experience. Retailers and vendors are increasingly forced to rely on digital and customer loyalty systems.
The emergence of the African market is also expected to drive the sector towards new developments. Indeed, over the past decade, many African countries have developed and promoted their specificities to attract large numbers of tourists, and the continent’s airports have become the best places to acquire luxury goods : Africa is becoming a key market for travel retail.
