A piece from the new Balenciaga collection is causing a stir. The Spanish fashion house has been accused by some of its clientele of cultural appropriation by describing the sweatpants it makes as racist.

Customers of the brand have taken to social media to denounce Balenciaga’s sweatpants, which they say appear to imitate “sagging”, a way of wearing trousers with underwear showing. This style has been popularised in particular by black youth culture in the US.

This story has gained particular momentum as sagging has developed in prisons in the US and some cities have decided to ban it. Indeed, in 2007, the state of Louisiana banned sagging, highlighting the lack of decency and modesty that the style represents.

A TikTok user, @mr200m__, denounced this piece from the new Balenciaga collection, which went viral in a matter of days, garnering more than 1.6 million views at the time. The caption of this video sets the scene: “You know when something feels racist”.

Reactions followed, such as this video showing two young British people expressing their indignation on the social network Twitter: “They have really just gentrified sagging”.

Another Twitter user wrote in relation to these Balenciaga sweatpants “Do you know how many black men have been vilified, discriminated against and killed because of this, for it to be marketed as high fashion?”

Balenciaga has yet to react to the controversy, as they have been accused of cultural appropriation in the past. This concerned the Barbes East-West Shopper Bag, which resembled the design of a bag nicknamed Ghana Must Go, from West Africa, in reference to the flight of thousands of undocumented migrants.
