The coronavirus pandemic has completely stopped tourism in India. The Indian hotel industry is thus in a deplorable situation.
The restaurant and hotel industry are the two sectors most affected in India by the Covid-19 pandemic. According to experts, it will take several years for the sector to recover.
Almost all segments associated with the hospitality industry, namely conferences, restaurants, weddings and family entertainment have been crippled by the impact of the health crisis.
And for good reason, in India, the second wave of coronavirus had reached record levels over the period of April and May. At that time, the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India had to ask the government of Narendra Modi for help.
Without the government’s support, the FRHAI warned of a collapse of the industry. The federation called for a moratorium on loan and interest payments. “Without wasting any more time, the government should make special arrangements to remove legal burdens on the hospitality sector. Ignoring the industry even now will push it to the point of no return,” said Gurbaxish Singh Kohli, vice president of FHRAI.
According to the Hotel Association of India, about 20-25% of Indian hotels are at risk of permanent closure.
Faced with this, many hotel chains have had to make the decision to stop hiring new employees, partially close hotel floors and restaurants and cut jobs. “The Indian tourism and hospitality industry is looking at a potential job loss of around 38 million, which is 70% of the total workforce in the sector, due to COVID,” Hari Sukumar, senior executive of Jaypee Palace Hotel told German newspaper DW.
“If this trend continues, it will be a setback for national employment,” Sukumar added, noting that the hotel sector directly and indirectly accounts for about 12.75% of all jobs in India.
In addition to announcing staff furloughs, unpaid leaves, hotel closures and the postponement of new hotel projects, many major chains believe that a sense of “business as usual” can only exist if domestic tourism returns.
But such a short-term recovery remains uncertain, leaving a question mark over the prospects for India’s hotel sector and the employees who work in it.
