Tesla launches Model S “Plaid”, the world’s fastest production car

At Tesla’s event at the Fremont factory on Thursday, Tesla Motors Chairman and CEO Elon Musk announced the start of deliveries of the brand’s fastest vehicle ever, the Model S “Plaid”.

Thursday night, Elon Musk was hosting an event at the Fremont, California factory for the marketing debut of his latest vehicle, the Model S Plaid. The presentation of Tesla‘s latest car was broadcast live on YouTube at 5:40 a.m. French time and gathered more than 80,000 Internet users.

The car, named after an iconic scene from the movie Spaceballs, was first mentioned by the company in 2019, and has three Model S engines, marketed by Tesla since 2012. “You have to feel it to believe it“, Elon Musk said of its market-first performance.

With a range of 620 km on a single charge and a peak power of 1,020 horsepower, the Tesla Model S Plaid can travel up to 320 kilometers per hour and accelerate from 0 to 97 km/h in 1.99 seconds. Tesla claims that it is the fastest accelerating vehicle on the market, and also the one with the longest range.

However, the company announced that the Model S Plaid would not be able to reach 96 km/h in 1.99 seconds during the presentation of the vehicle’s performance in Fremont, because due to a technical problem, the modification of the tires could not be completed in time. “The indicated Plaid top speed requires appropriate wheels and tires, which will be available in the fall of 2021“, the online configurator states.

Available in France starting in September 2020, the price of the Tesla Model S “Plaid” increased by $10,000 just before its launch, and stood yesterday at $129,999. Last Sunday, Elon Musk announced on Twitter that Tesla was dropping the Plaid+ model, designed to achieve a maximum range of 830 km, and marketed at a price of 150,000 €.

By the end of the Tesla event, 25 Model S Plaid vehicles had reached their first customers. From next quarter, the volume of deliveries will increase to 1000 units per week.

This latest release comes in a context of stability for Tesla, which announced positive results for the month of May 2021, and with this new release, the brand remains confident “We must show that an electric car is the best car, hands down,” says Elon Musk
