Samaritaine opening postponed to June 23

The group LVMH announced that the opening of the Samaritaine, scheduled for June 19, has been postponed to June 23. The inauguration of the building, closed since 2005, has been postponed due to a “change in LVMH’s internal schedule”.

La Samaritaine de Paris will open on June 23 instead of June 19, as initially planned. This postponement of the long-awaited opening is caused by a “change of internal agenda at LVMH“. Prior to the health crisis, the opening was scheduled for the 150th anniversary of the Samaritaine in 2020.

LVMH has been the majority shareholder of the Samaritaine since 2001, but the group had to wait until 2015 to have its building permit validated and begin renovations. Indeed, several associations involved in heritage conservation mobilized against the construction of a contemporary glass façade.

The luxury hotel Cheval Blanc, also owned by the LVMH group, has moved into the building, but its opening date has not yet been announced. The Parisian palace has 72 rooms and suites and offers a breathtaking view of the Seine. In addition to the Cheval Blanc hotel, the Samaritaine will house 15,000 square meters of office space and 96 social housing units managed by the Paris Habitat organization.

The historic Samaritaine store, meanwhile, will cover 20,000 square meters – slightly less than the 30,000 square meters it initially included before the work. According to LVMH, “spaces designed by Sanaa, Hubert de Malherbe, Ciguë and Yabu Pushelberg” will take place in the building.

Finally, the four spaces of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Jewels have been completely renovated. One of the spaces was even classified as a historical monument and was renovated to enhance the dated materials. LVMH had announced that “more than 1,500 jobs would be created” with the renovation of the Samaritaine, including 800 for the department store alone, and “with the offices, more than 2,400 direct jobs will be perpetuated on-siteo tym.
