Diamond producer Lucara Diamond Corp announced through a press release the discovery of a magnificent 549 carat white diamond, and announced that it is working with Louis Vuitton and HB Antwerp to sublimate the “Sethunya”.

Lucara Diamond Corp, a member of the Natural Diamond Council, unveiled in a press release its agreement with Louis Vuitton and diamond cutter HB Antwerp. Lucara details its discovery of the “Sethunya” diamond, and announces that it is working with Louis Vuitton and HB Antwerp to enhance the diamond.

The diamond was discovered as is, in February 2020 at the Karowe mine in Botswana, a mine owned by Lucara Diamond Corp. The 549 carat extra-pure rough white diamond was named “Sethunya“, which means “flower” in Setswana.

This agreement marks Lucara‘s second partnership with Louis Vuitton and HB Antwerp, following the one initiated earlier this year for Sewelô, Botswana‘s largest diamond (1,758 carats), mined in Karowe last year. Sethunya is mined from the same south lobe unit that has already revealed precious diamonds like Sewelô.

As part of this partnership, Lucara, Louis Vuitton and HB Antwerp will collaborate to create polished diamonds of the highest value from the 549 carat rough that will be shaped by Louis Vuitton.

The Lucara group will receive a purchase price based on the estimated polishing result, determined by HB Antwerp’s state-of-the-art scanning and planning technologies, with a price mark-up based on actual subsequent sales of polished diamonds, less a royalty and manufacturing cost.

Continuing its cherished tradition of customization, Louis Vuitton plans to magnify this rare specimen according to the customer’s wishes. The diamonds will be mounted to order, for a made-to-measure Haute Joaillerie experience. The customer will be involved in every step of the shaping process.

Lucara‘s CEO, Eira Thomas, said: “After the Sewelô experience, we are extremely pleased to renew this innovative partnership. Bringing together the manufacturing and supply chain expertise of HB Antwerp and the world’s leading luxury brand, Louis Vuitton, it will transform the Sethunya, an exceptionally pure and highly coloured 549 carat rough diamond from Karowe, into an extraordinary collection of custom polished diamonds, exclusively tailored to the desires of Louis Vuitton‘s global clientele“.

As is already the case with all diamonds extracted from the Lucara mines, the sale of the Sethunya white diamond contributes to the sustainable and social development programs of the people of Botswana.
