American elections 2020 : the American fashion and luxury trade worried

Pending the results of the U.S. presidential elections, all sectors and merchants are concerned about the consequences that this will have on the market but especially on the population.

In New York, more than half of the stores and especially the big luxury houses are barricaded in the streets.

In the uncertain expectation of the election results, major brands such as Fendi, Montblanc, Céline, Hermès or Chanel, have decided to install huge plywood store fronts in front of their stores to protect themselves from possible unrest outside following the announcement of the results which will take place soon. This announcement does not, however, indicate any date for the planned reopening.

The international luxury jeweler Tiffany, who also barricaded himself, expressed himself on the subject: “Even if we intend to remain open when it is possible, as a precautionary measure, the windows of some stores will be posted in anticipation of potential unrest related to the elections“.

Against all expectations, while in recent years fashion brands have always been reluctant on subjects revolving around politics, this is a radical change of position. Fashion has decided to engage through luxury brands as well as popular and mainstream brands, as with Ralph Lauren, Levi’s, Gabriela Hearst, Thom Browne, Joseph Altuzarra and Louis Vuitton.

This trendy phenomenon plays on political slogans and calls to vote, such as the “Vote!” on a Gap, Levi’s or Urban Outfitters t-shirt, or the “Choose Your Future. Vote” on the new Marc Jacobs sweatshirt.

These new election special collections get everyone talking, even American celebrities, who are usually not big customers of politically committed brands. According to the New York Times, these collections are even offered their own product category with a voting theme, which has become the must-have of the season according to the American trade press.

Other sectors are showing their concern about the approaching results.

The business and financial sectors are wondering about the consequences of American life and its inhabitants. Uncertainty continues and traders fear riots and post-election violence.

While American companies may appear to be politically neutral, their actions show the opposite. The latest arms figures show a sharp increase this quarter and a strengthening of security on all fronts. “It is a difficult election for many companies“. said Allison Wood, Co-Director of Control Risks, a commercial risk consulting firm. The numbers show a significant increase in the demand for additional security, both armed and unarmed.

The country’s leading security firm, Allied Universal, has seen its demand rise sharply in recent months by 75%, with 2.7 million products purchased in June 2020, compared to 1.5 million during the 2016 presidential election. Between requests for armed services, close protection and intelligence gathering, demand is exploding in all branches of the sector.

It is unusual for the country and its population to hold elections in this way, which are generally very calm. Wall Street was also very concerned about the possible risks of the results that are approaching and the various events that have taken place, particularly with the various demonstrations against police violence, health restrictions in the face of the global pandemic, threats made by extreme right-wing clans in some states or President Donald Trump who had expressed himself violently regarding postal voting.

The whole country has been sending out an image of anguish and fear for some time now, waiting for this to happen and street vendors are beginning to prepare for it, such as Starbucks cafes, Subway sandwich shops and CVS drugstores in Washington that have decided to barricade themselves as well as in San Francisco, where 75% of the commercial district has been completely barricaded.
