The latter has just been elected by the Board of Directors of the French Spirits Federation (FFS) and replaces Michel Gayraud, President of Brown-Forman France, who had been in office since 2016.

During my term of office, I will be committed to continuing the projects and achievements led by my predecessor Michel Gayraud, particularly in the area of corporate social responsibility,” said Jean-Pierre Cointreau.

CEO of the Renaud Cointreau family group, recently renamed Iconic Nectars, which has been a director of the federation for 16 years, Jean-Pierre Cointreau is described as “a man of dialogue who wishes to strengthen the bridges with other sectors of the alcoholic beverage industry” and “one of the main ambassadors of spirit tourism in France“.

The wine and spirits sector is in search of renewal, after the difficulties caused by the economic crisis since mid-March, a study by the FFS reveals that 60% of establishments that carry out direct sales will see their sales fall by more than 80% in the first half of 2020.

It has been a tough year for the wine and spirits industry. After the US tax on French wines and the health crisis, the sector is struggling to recover and the figures are becoming increasingly alarming. In exports, still in the first half of the year, more than one company in four suffered a loss of more than 40% of its turnover.

In addition, the French Federation of Spirits added that the economic context was already unfavorable last year in France, with a drop in sales volume of 3.5% in mass distribution. Nevertheless, the sector is benefiting from a European subsidy of 80 million euros for 2021, to cushion the impact of the health crisis on sales of wines and spirits.
