The FENDI brand announced this Wednesday, September 9, the appointment of Kim Jones as Artistic Director of the haute couture, ready-to-wear and women’s fur collections. One year after the death of Karl Lagerfeld, the artistic director of Dior’s men’s ready-to-wear line is taking up the torch again.

Kim Jones will join Silvia Venturini Fendi, the third generation of the Fendi family, who will continue to create the accessories and menswear collections“. said Fendi in a statement.

At the same time, Kim Jones will retain his role as artistic director of DIOR Homme.

Bernard Arnault is delighted with this appointment: “Kim Jones is a great talent and since his arrival, he has never ceased to prove his ability to adapt to the codes and heritage of the LVMH houses while revisiting them with great modernity and audacity. At the FENDI, I am convinced that his vision and passion will greatly contribute to the success of the women’s collections“.

For his part, the 46-year-old English designer said: “I would like to thank Mr Arnault, Pietro Beccari, Serge Brunschwig and Silvia Venturini Fendi for this incredible opportunity. Working in two such prestigious houses is a real honour as a designer and to be able to join the FENDI house while continuing my work at Dior Homme is a huge privilege“.

Karl Lagerfeld, Creative Director for Chanel, had also been recruited by the Fendi sisters as early as 1965 and had been noticed for his work on fur in the haute couture collections. On the strength of his success, in 1977 he presented his first women’s ready-to-wear collection for the Roman house, which he never stopped designing, in duo with Silvia Venturini Fendi.

Serge Brunschwig, President and CEO of FENDI, also made a statement: “I am delighted to welcome Kim Jones to FENDI. Kim is one of today’s most talented and relevant designers. Together with Silvia Venturini Fendi, who has virtually perpetuated the legacy of FENDI and Karl Lagerfeld, Kim will bring his unique contemporary perspective to the world of FENDI“.

Finally, Silvia Venturini Fendi, Artistic Director of Accessories and Men’s Clothing of the FENDI, said: “I extend a warm welcome to Kim, to whom I am bound by a deep respect and friendship. I look forward to taking the world of FENDI to the next level with him“.

Kim Jones will present her first FENDI ready-to-wear collection for the Autumn/Winter 2021-22 season at the Milan Fashion Week in February.

As fashion journalist Pierre Alexandre M’Pelé, aka PAM BOY on Twitter, says, when was the last time we saw a designer take over the art direction of two such prestigious houses? “A very Lagerfeldian approach”, ironizes Loïc Prigent in the legend of a video of the Kaiser’s last fashion show for the Italian label, published on Instagram this Wednesday, September 9th.
