The online auction project “La Biennale Paris chez Christie’s” was launched on the initiative of La Biennale Paris and the Syndicat National des Antiquaires. The online sale will take place over 10 days during the first fortnight of October 2020 following the postponement of the 32nd edition due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is the must-attend event that inaugurates the Parisian cultural season every autumn.

The Biennale Paris is one of the most prestigious art events in the world, bringing together the greatest art, antique and design dealers, jewellers and international collectors under the iconic nave of the Grand Palais.

This annual exhibition, organized by eminent art and antique dealers, presents museum-quality works covering 6,000 years of art from all continents and all disciplines, including archaeology, painting, textiles, sculpture, ceramics and the decorative arts.

For its part, Christie’s is the world’s leading auction house, with sales totalling 5 billion Euros in 2019.

After about 4 weeks of discussions with the merchants, and with the sale to be completed by mid-August, more than 25 merchants have already confirmed their interest in participating in the sale and 35 lots have already been signed or confirmed for about 2.5 to 3.5 million euros.

Discussions are continuing with around 20 other galleries. The aim is to bring together around 60 to 80 lots in a selective sale, representing all the different sensibilities within the Biennial.

Given the calendar of international events, and the slower than expected resumption of activities, La Biennale Paris and Christie’s have decided to postpone the sale for a few days.

It will take place over 10 days during the first fortnight of October 2020 in order to benefit from greater public and media exposure.

“We now have 25 major dealers who have confirmed their interest in the online sale and are currently finalizing their discussions about the works they wish to entrust. In this context of unprecedented uncertainty, and at a time when most of the fairs scheduled for the autumn in Europe will not be able to take place, we are convinced that this innovative project, in association with an international auction house, will be a great showcase for our profession. It will enable antique dealers and art dealers to present their works in an unprecedented way until we meet again in the Grand Palais Éphémère in September 2021,” says Georges De Jonckheere, President of La Biennale Paris.

In order to facilitate this online sale and make this day more dynamic, the Christie’s Biennale Paris has decided to set up a protocol :

Indeed, the sale will be accessible on the main page of Christies.com

The brand will offer an interactive platform, including an interactive map allowing customers to easily see where the galleries and works are located.

A virtual stand will also be available for customers to make direct contact with dealers.

In addition, the works will be exhibited in Paris at participating dealers throughout the sale.

Gallery owners based abroad will have the opportunity to exhibit their lots at a colleague’s in Paris or in a dedicated showroom at Christie’s in Paris.

A vernissage in the form of a tour of the participating galleries will take place at the opening of the sale.

And finally, the organization of a digital symposium on the profession of art and antique dealer and the new challenges of the art market.

It should be noted that in 2020, La Biennale Paris has committed itself to reversing the profits of its Gala Dinner at the Stéphane Bern Mission for the Fondation du Patrimoine.

On the occasion of this sale, Christie’s once again supports this commitment and will donate part of its commission to the Stéphane Bern Mission, thus underlining the cultural dimension of this project.
