Puig is about to buy makeup brand Charlotte Tilbury for more than a billion dollars

The fashionable make-up brand Charlotte Tilbury is about to be sold in Puig. The Spanish group, which specializes in the perfumery and cosmetics sectors, already has Paco Rabanne and Jean-Paul Gauthier fragrances in its brand portfolio. It is now getting ready to spend more than a billion dollars to acquire this successful brand.

The takeover deal could be announced this week, according to Bloomberg, which mentions an anonymous source. Puig is continuing talks with Byron Trott’s investment firm, BDT Capital Partners, which he wants to partner with to support this major purchase.

Founded by renowned London make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury, the eponymous brand with its gold-pink packaging promotes “Hollywood glamour”. Particularly known for its nude pink Pillow Talk lipstick that “flatters all skin tones” and its moisturizing Magic Cream, the brand is the object of all covetousness. However, the designer wishes to retain a minority stake in the company.

If last year was a missed year for prestige cosmetic brands, Charlotte Tilbury is among the only two brands of the twenty largest labels in the United States to grow in the first half of the year, according to data from the NPD Group.

Despite the impact of Covid-19 on the beauty industry, the two international groups Unilever and Puig were therefore quick to position themselves for a possible takeover of the brand, according to rumours.

L’Oréal SA, Estée Lauder Cos and Shiseido had also expressed interest in Charlotte Tilbury’s brand, according to a report by Bloomberg News.

If Puig seems to be ahead of its competitors, we are still waiting for the outcome of the negotiations to know the future of the cosmetics brand.
