It’ s a very bad time for one of the biggest car shows in the world. After a 2020 show that was cancelled at the last minute because of the coronavirus, the 2021 edition also seems to be compromised. The organizers hint that the Swiss event may not happen again until spring 2022. We explain here why.

The coronavirus epidemic has already been a hard blow for the organizers of the Geneva Motor Show, forced to cancel it only a few days before the scheduled date, when most of the stands were already set up.

A last-minute cancellation that has put the financial health of the organisation under strain, resulting in a loss of 11 million francs (10.3 million euros).

A loss which then prompted the organizers of the Salon to request financial support from the State of Geneva in order to obtain a loan to cover the losses of the 2020 edition.

The State Council offered the foundation a sum of 16.8 million francs, but the granting of this aid was subject to two requests, which the foundation finally refused to accept.

On the first hand, the organisation of the GIMS (Geneva International Motor Show) had to be entirely sub-contracted to Palexpo. An option that was unanimously refuted by the Foundation: “The conditions accompanying this loan and, in particular, aimed at the complete subcontracting of the Show, including the conceptualization to Palexpo SA, are unfortunately not acceptable to the Foundation. Indeed, they are contrary to the statutes and, in particular, to the Foundation’s raison d’être for more than 100 years“, it justifies in a press release.

On the other hand, this financial assistance should have been used to organize the 2021 edition of the show, which is still “very uncertain” right now since the manufacturers are not sure if they will be able to pay new fees to attend the Swiss Exhibition Centre next year, while the coronavirus crisis continues to weigh heavily on their budget.

The major GIMS exhibitors are encouraging us and strongly recommend that we look forward to next year’s edition in 2022“, says the foundation, suggesting that the Geneva Motor Show will again have to be postponed in 2021 and finally take place in 2022.

“It is therefore with deep regret that the Foundation is forced to renounce the State of Geneva’s loan offer“, it concludes bitterly, raising doubts about a possible return of the Geneva show in the future.

This is a cold shower for the foundation but also for the 700,000 car aficionados, even if the organisation has tried to be reassuring regarding the future, explaining that it will “continue its research in order to regain financial stability as soon as possible and plan a future edition.”
