Louis Vuitton has just announced this Tuesday, May 26, the appointment of Johnny Coca as the director of its women’s leather goods collections. Graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris, successively designer at Céline then creative director at Mulberry, the Spanish artist, polyglot from an early age, is an architect of success. Here is a portrait of this performer.

A Gifted Leather Goods Artist

Born in Seville from two Spanish parents, Johnny Coca became passionate about art, architecture and design at a very young age and quickly understood that he was destined for a career as a designer.

He promptly decided to leave the Iberian Peninsula to go to Paris, where he studied at the Beaux-Arts and at the Boulle School of Applied Arts.

From then on, success followed success: in 1996, the budding designer took his first classes in leather goods by designing bags for Louis Vuitton, acquiring unique know-how in the field from the French brand.

My best school, my real training, is Louis Vuitton. I had, in particular, proposed a concept for showcases for which I miniaturized all the bags in the LV catalogue. (…) A bag is like a building or a chair, it’s a three-dimensional object. At Vuitton’s, I worked in Asnières, where I spent my time with the workshop’s leatherworkers. Raymonde, Marie-Carmen, these women taught me everything: trimming, splitting, dyeing, stitching leather. I love to feel the hand of the craftsman“, he said in 2018 in Le Figaro columns.

Henceforth, everything Johnny Coca touches will be transformed … into leather.

In 2010, he joins the ready-to-wear and leather goods company Céline where he will work wonders: he reinvents Céline’s trapeze bag – making it a true object of desire in the fashion world – and thus propels the house to the forefront of the international scene.

This unquestionable talent will allow him, five years later in 2015, to take over the artistic direction of the British fashion house Mulberry.

As he joins Louis Vuitton 24 years later, Johnny Coca is returning to his roots and may well dominate the world of leather goods even more: “Today I am proud to join Nicolas Ghesquière and the Louis Vuitton teams to develop the women’s handbag lines and fine leather goods. I am now embarking on a new stage of my own creative journey in this laboratory between heritage and modernity.” he recently declared.

More than a leather goods designer, the polyglot Spanish-born designer (he speaks four languages fluently) also knows how to inject a modern touch into his creations.

An architect of modernity

He has a rich background in international luxury and fashion that will help us to bring new energy and innovation to Mulberry“, commented Godfrey Davis, then CEO of Mulberry, in 2015, hoping the appointment would breathe new life into the British company and turn it into a global luxury brand.

And these were not vain hopes: in addition to signing the emblematic bags (now best-sellers) Amberley and Iris, Johnny Coca was able to enrich its activity as a leather goods manufacturer and diversify Mulberry’s offer through a line of glasses, sneakers, jewelry but also a men’s collection.

From 2015 to 2020, the Spanish designer has been excelling in all categories, from jewellery to ready-to-wear, diversifying his talents and transforming Mulberry into a 360° creative house.

He has also achieved his goal of giving leather a new impetus and creating highly recognisable and saleable products for the brand: “With Mulberry, it’s all about the long tradition of leather goods – I think it’s the only strong leather goods company in the whole of the UK. The bags are a real success, so I am not planning to redesign them. But I do want to create a stronger link with the craftsmanship, bring it up to date, and make the designs more internationally appealing by offering more options in terms of colour, texture and function.” he explained at the time.

By upgrading Mulberry’s desirability and profitability criteria, Johnny Coca has taken the brand from accessible luxury to desirable luxury.

It is therefore a “king of accessories” and a “master of innovation” that the world’s leading luxury brand LVMH has just appointed and who will join the artistic director of the women’s collections, Nicolas Ghesquière, from June 2nd.

I am delighted that Johnny has returned to Louis Vuitton and the LVMH Group. He will enrich our creative force and our capacity for innovation“, declared Delphine Arnault, the brand’s Executive Vice President.

In these difficult times marked by the coronavirus crisis, Johnny Coca is certainly a promise of increased strength and creativity for LVMH.

And of a resilience for the fashion industry as a whole.
