While it was to be officially presented at the Geneva Motor Show (Switzerland), canceled because of the Covid-19, the new Bentley convertible, baptized Bacalar, was finally unveiled virtually. But since March 20, all production of the British manufacturer has been suspended at its headquarters in Crewe, in United Kingdom.

This year, the Geneva Motor Show was to be held from March 5 to 15. The latter was however canceled due to the Covid-19. Among the many expelled exhibitors from the show, the manufacturer Bentley, had finally unveiled virtually its brand new hyper-luxury convertible called Bacalar as reported by CNN Business. Since then, the entire production of Crewe’s business has been suspended.

Bacalar, a resolutely sustainable model

The Bacalar, which takes its name from a lake on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, known for its beauty, has a 12-cylinder 650 horsepower engine and has an eight-speed transmission.

The most : the ‘durable’ characteristics of this model which has a very special interior coating made from trees aged 5,000 years. Aging for five millennia in moist soil which gives this natural wood a black color, details CNN.

Only 12 copies of the Bacalar will be produced and all have already been sold. Customers have contacted Bentley’s Mulliner division, which makes the cars, to select the colors and fabrics for their Bacalar.

Price of this little gem : two million dollars.

Production suspended in its British factory

Bentley Motors has however indicated since March 20 that it would suspend the production of all its models on the same day at its headquarters in Crewe, UK, for four weeks.

According to the company’s explanations, this decision is based on the acceleration of the rate of infection with the coronavirus and the restrictions applied in this regard. Supply chain disruptions and declining demand in certain automotive markets have prompted Bentley management to take these steps.

Adrian Hallmark, President and CEO of Bentley Motors, said : “The well-being of our work mates is our number one priority and although it was a difficult decision, it was necessary to protect them as best we could. can in these unprecedented times. This will inevitably have an impact on our deliveries to customers, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

The main commercial functions will continue throughout the closure with operators based in Crewe, following safety instructions while working remotely. Production will not resume until April 20.
