Art basel: How luxury positions itself in Miami

The famous contemporary art event has just ended, as it does every year, in the heart of Miami Beach. And if the best of the art has met here, Art Basel is also an opportunity for fashion houses to get off the beaten track.

It was in the heart of the Design District but also in Miami Beach that the Florida version of Art Basel was held, where this year luxury made its place in gold.

A banana taped to a wall sold for $120,000 inspires…

This year, Art Basel Miami had a slight fruity taste. Indeed, the artist Maurizio Cattelan sold a real 200-gram banana taped to a wall for $120,000.

The work entitled Comedian has whetted the appetite of collectors, as all five copies have been sold.

Then the artist David Datuna, decided on December 7 to satisfy himself and eat the work in question without worrying about the price “in order to shock the bourgeoisie”.

Then many creative minds quickly diverted the work. This is the case of Jacquemus with his famous Chiquito.

It has replaced the banana with one of its flagship products, the Chiquito bag.

Dior and Bottega Veneta do their show

Recently, it has also become possible to see a new kind of fauna that evolves during the exhibition.

This year, it was Dior that opened the ball by presenting its autumn-winter 2020 men’s collection.

And also by presenting the Air-Dior, a flagship basketball player of this event, created in collaboration with Nike, and sold for the “modest” sum of $150,000.

The latter, who also wanted to pay tribute to Mr. Dior’s past as a gallery owner, chose to present this exceptional show in front of the Rubell Museum, named after this family that owns the largest collection of contemporary art in North America.

In any case, the Florida city continues to attract houses, as did Bottega Veneta, which opened a brand new boutique in the Design District in mid-November.

To coincide with this “opening”, Bottega invested a real American dinner, whose sixties façade was covered with gold for the occasion.

Miu Miu, Prada, Berlutti,…: Fashion houses invest the event through artistic collaborations

For many companies, Art Basel is also an opportunity to partner with artists.

This is the case of Miu Miu, Prada’s younger sister, who collaborated with the French design duo M / M Paris to design a stool with the appearance of a ladies’ game, the M / Marbles Stool, limited to 40 pieces.

For its part, Berluti has partnered with Galerie Downtown to present 17 original pieces of furniture signed Pierre Jeanneret and covered for the occasion with the house’s emblematic leather, Venezia.

Finally, Valentino, called on the artist Emilio Villalba.
