The English brand Christopher Kane, formerly owned by the Kering group, has just been bought by the eponymous creators Christopher and Tammy Kane.

The Christopher Kane High End Fashion House has just been bought by its eponymous designers, Christopher Kane and his big sister Tammy.

The two designers therefore acquired the Christopher Kane brand as well as More Joy at a low price, as part of a pre-packaged agreement, which now sees them holding the assets and intellectual property.

The FTS Recovery administrator stated that he had obtained an immediate sale to the original brand founders. He adds: “The sale of the assets has succeeded in ensuring the full repayment of the secured creditor and we anticipate that a distribution will also be made available to the privileged creditors“.

The British trademark filed a notice of appointment of administrator in June, ranking among the many small Anglo-Saxon brands in trouble. Before that, the artistic director and founder had tried all the necessary means to find a buyer, without success. She was almost bankrupt a month ago. In 2020, the company posted a loss of almost £5 million, compared to a profit of more than 11 million a year earlier.

With this “rescue” acquisition, Christopher Kane will continue as an independent label.

Ups and downs

Christopher Kane is a British designer. After graduating from one of the world’s leading fashion schools- La Central Saint Martins- he launched his label on his behalf in 2006 in collaboration with his older sister Tammy Kane.

A few years later, in 2013, the Kering group bought a 51% majority stake. But 5 years later in 2018, the Kane family took control, while the luxury group preferred to focus more on its star labels.

The pandemic was another blow to the brand, whose production is focused on evening wear.

However, Christopher Kane remains a prominent brand in the London fashion sphere. She has made a name for herself by collaborating with a number of labels and large companies such as TopShop, Disney and Versace. She has also dressed celebrities such as the former first lady of the United States Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton or singer Rihanna.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for this internationally recognized brand, now that it is once again an independent label.
