Interbrand, the world’s largest brand consultancy, today published its annual Breakthrough Brands Report for 2023. It highlights the brands that are evolving the most in the fields of metaverse, artificial intelligence and sustainable technology. And who are influencing the market and consumer behavior.

On Tuesday, in partnership with Vox Media, Interbrand presented the 30 most innovative brands in its Breakthrough Brands report. These brands stand out in a competitive landscape by building distinctive identities and a long-term vision.

The top 12 brands on the list are taking emblematic steps to become the next generation of influential, sustainable brands.

Interbrand’s report also highlights 18 other brands that represent emerging trends in beauty and wellness, the fusion of sustainability and style, the creation of new trends in the food industry and in terms of innovative approaches.

“This year’s brand analysis is representative of what’s happening in today’s society and culture”, said Daniel Binns, Global Growth Director and CEO of Interbrand New York. “Most industries are increasingly crowded with a multitude of brands offering similar services. Brands that are bold enough to stand out from the crowd have the best chance of success.”

This report marks the sixth edition of the publication, which has previously successfully predicted the emergence of challenger brands destined for fame and impressive growth, such as Mythical Games (2022), Athletic Brewing (2021), Maven Clinic (2020), Slack (2017) and Headspace (2016).

Infinite potential for expansion

This year, the report classifies brands into different sections, each representing the fundamental human needs and cultural shifts that brands are responding to. Today’s brands have infinite potential for expansion and evolution, no longer limited to a single category or sector of activity.

Brands highlighted in this year’s report include OpenAI, which attracted a million users in just five days thanks to ChatGPT; Neko Health, an affordable health technology created by Spotify founder Daniel Ek; Zepeto, Asia’s largest metaverse platform; Betterhalf, a matrimonial app used by 100 million professionals in India; and Fishwife, a successful canned fish brand.

“Brands are recognizing the power of 3D virtual environments to create more immersive and engaging shopping experiences”, says Neha Singh, founder and CEO of Obsess, a virtual store platform that enables brands to create immersive, discovery-driven shopping experiences. “As virtual stores become a mainstream way for brands to establish deeper connections with consumers, the next few years will be decisive for the retail sector’s adaptation.”

For the second year in a row, more than 50% of the breakthrough brands of 2023 were founded by women or people of color, or have board members from these groups.
