The number one in luxury goods will be rolling out this fluid, secure payment solution from this year in American outlets such as Sephora, Christian Dior Couture, Celine, Tiffany & Co and Louis Vuitton.

The Viva Technology trade fair, which came to a close in Paris on 17 June, provides an opportunity to discover the new technological solutions that will be arriving in our daily lives tomorrow or the day after.

But the LVMH group, a founding partner of this major showcase for innovation, is also taking advantage of this window of opportunity to announce the imminent arrival of a state-of-the-art payment solution in some of its American shops.

The number one in luxury goods has announced that Tap to Pay on the iPhone will be available across the Atlantic later this year in points of sale belonging to Sephora, Christian Dior Couture, Celine, Tiffany & Co and Louis Vuitton.

A simple, secure and private method

“Tap to Pay on iPhone is a simple, secure and private way to accept contactless payments in LVMH shops using your iPhone, without any additional hardware,” explains the group in a press release.

Announced just over a year ago by Apple, the new Tap to Pay feature, which enables users to turn their iPhone into an EFTPOS terminal, was first launched in the United States on XS models.

“With Tap to Pay on iPhone, LVMH customer advisers will be able to accept payments via Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards and other digital wallets anywhere in the shop, simply by using their iPhone and a compatible iOS application, with no additional hardware required, regardless of the amount of the purchase,” the world’s number one luxury goods retailer explained today.

LVMH is also taking pains to reassure its future customers about the potential risks of this new system. Apple’s Tap to Pay technology on the iPhone uses the iPhone’s built-in functions to preserve the confidentiality and security of customer data,” the group points out. When a payment is made, Apple does not store card numbers on the device or on its servers”.

Fluid, transparent and secure experience

“The introduction of Tap to Pay on the iPhone in LVMH shops in the United States will help to provide our customers with a seamless, transparent and secure shopping experience,” says Franck Le Moal, LVMH’s IT and Technology Director, who also points out that “this initiative meets a growing demand” from customers, “more and more of whom are opting for contactless payments and the use of digital wallets”.

LVMH also says that its adoption of Tap to Pay on iPhone “marks a new stage in the clienteling strategy” of its Houses. All its customer advisers are already equipped with a dedicated clienteling application that gives them access to the product catalogue and various CRM tools. This will enable them to offer customers “customised support throughout their purchasing process”.

The pandemic had prompted their customers to turn to online shopping. MCKinsey has predicted that nearly 20% of luxury goods sales will be made online by 2025. That still leaves more than 80% sold in physical stores…

And luxury players like LVMH still have every interest in welcoming their customers in-store. “Our shops are the showcase for the excellence of our creations, and we take great care to ensure that the customer experience, from the moment they enter one of our shops right through to the end of the transaction, is beyond reproach,” stresses Franck Le Moal (LVMH).

And the introduction of an innovation like Tap to Pay is perfectly in keeping with this “seamless” in-store experience. Enough to make customers want to do it all over again.
