For the first time, Veuve Clicquot is offering its guests a rare opportunity to visit the Åland cellar as part of an unforgettable trip between Champagne and the Åland Islands next June.
A unique experience! From June 22 to 25, 2023, Veuve Clicquot is organizing a trip for a small group to discover its Åland cellar, immersed in the Baltic Sea. The three-night experience begins in Champagne, where guests will tour the House’s vineyards before being invited to a tasting in the cellars. After a VIP dinner and overnight stay at the Hotel du Marc, the group will sail to the Åland Islands aboard the schooner Albanus. The day-long trip includes gourmet meals prepared by Michelin-starred chef Filip Gemzell.
The next day, guests will start with sunrise fishing and breakfast in Silverskär. They will then travel to Klobben and Champagne Island for a tasting of bottles from the Åland Islands’ vault, hosted by Didier Mariotti, Veuve Clicquot’s cellar master. The trip will end with another dinner prepared by Chef Mathias Dahlgren and a final night at the Silverskär Hotel.
The most exciting part of the tour is undoubtedly the opportunity for experienced divers to descend into the underwater wine cellar with the diver who discovered the wreck in 2010 to see where the bottles are submerged.
“We are thrilled to offer our guests the opportunity to experience Veuve Clicquot’s 40 years between Champagne and the Baltic Sea for the first time. The latter offers an exceptional aging environment thanks to its low salinity and constant temperature, which guarantees exceptional wines“, said Jean-Marc Gallot, CEO of Veuve Clicquot.
Incredible discovery
In July 2010, a team of divers in the southern Åland archipelago, located between Sweden and Finland, discovered the wreck of a ship that sank nearly two centuries ago. Inside were 168 bottles of champagne… 47 of which were made by Veuve Clicquot between 1839 and 1841! A few months later, the tasting of ten of these bottles delivered a pleasant surprise, revealing a wine of exceptional quality.
Four years later, Veuve Clicquot launched its audacious “Cellar in the Sea” experiment to reproduce these conditions. The objective? To better understand the maturation process of champagne in an environment where the precious vintages are protected from heat and light.
Scientific experiment
On June 18, a selection of non-vintage Carte Jaune (75 cl and magnum), Vintage Rosé 2004 and off-dry wines were placed inside the “Åland Vault”, a metal cage created especially for the occasion and destined to be submerged 40 meters below the surface of the sea, close to the site where the wreck was discovered. The absence of light, a constantly low temperature (4°C) and the pressure equivalent to that of the bottle are all essential elements for the ageing of a wine.
The evolution of the sample is monitored by the House’s Chefs de Caves, who also oversee an absolutely identical selection stored in the Veuve Clicquot chalk cellars in Reims. For this meticulous scientific experiment, regular samples will be taken to allow a jury of professionals to conduct tastings that will be compared with the bottles stored in the chalk cellars in Reims. Samples of the wines stored at sea will also be sent to the oenology universities of Reims and Bordeaux for technical analysis, in order to discover the secrets of aging in the Baltic Sea.
