Hennessy and British designer Kim Jones presented their first collaboration, a limited edition Hennessy X.O. collection. This surprising partnership, which celebrates the skills of couture and spirits, is not lacking in style and effectiveness.

An unexpected and daring collab. Hennessy, the cognac house of LVMH, and Kim Jones, the artistic director of men’s collections at Dior and women’s collections at Fendi, have presented their first collaboration. The collection, which will be available on March 17, includes a very limited edition decanter, a decanter inspired by this masterpiece available on a larger scale and a pair of very exclusive sneakers.

This Hennessy X.O x Kim Jones collab thus celebrates couture and cognac, two sectors where craftsmanship and know-how are honored.

“We are delighted to embark on a new odyssey, blending cognac making and couture with Kim Jones, a creative master of our time”, said Laurent Boillot, CEO of Hennessy, “Inspired by the iconic personality of Hennessy X.O., Kim has developed a resolutely contemporary collection, destined to make a mark on the culture of today and tomorrow.

Kim Jones also joins the list of artists who have contributed to Hennessy X.O’s heritage over the years, such as Frank Gehry, Marc Newson, Ridley Scott and Arik Levy.

“I was interested in Hennessy’s heritage, behind which artisans have spent hundreds of years creating this special cognac”, explains the designer.

Couture and Cognac

For his first creation with Hennessy, Kim Jones designed a pair of sneakers, called HNY Low. This limited edition, made in Italy by LVMH, is inspired by old basketball shoe models and is made of cognac-colored nubuck leather. Over time, the sneaker is expected to develop a patina, “in reference to Hennessy’s brandies”, Hennessy said in a release.

Underneath the rubber sole, a vine print and the Hennessy X.O x Kim Jones logo can be seen. The heel of the sneaker discreetly features the initials KJ and the Hennessy emblem, the sword arm. This sneaker is “a glass of cognac in the shape of a sneaker”, summarizes Kim Jones. The packaging is not lacking in style either and is also directly inspired by the world of cognac: the sneaker is sold in an oak box, reminiscent of the barrels used for ageing eaux-de-vie.

Exclusive decanters

Created exclusively for Hennessy by Kim Jones, designed using 3D printing technology and finished by hand, the Hennessy X.O “Masterpiece” decanter was produced in a limited edition of only 200 pieces. It is inspired by the making of Hennessy X.O cognac, a know-how perpetuated by master blenders for eight generations. Covered by a titanium envelope specially developed for the occasion, the design of the decanter refers to the way Hennessy bottles were prepared at the beginning of the 20th century. The bottles were wrapped in tissue paper to protect their fragile parchment labels. The bottom of the “Masterpiece” decanter, a corrugated oak tray, is also reminiscent of the barrels used to age brandies. While the decanter is completely hidden, the cognac can be extracted with a serving rifle designed by Kim Jones, a ritual for tasting Hennessy X.O. cognac.

“When I saw how the Hennessy bottles were packaged, it spoke volumes about the craftsmanship used to make each one and how they were handled”, describes Kim Jones. “I was particularly interested in their history and the fact that generations have dedicated their time in this way to improving each step of the process.”

The final piece in the collection is also a limited edition version though available on a larger scale. This Hennessy X.O decanter is wrapped in an aluminum second skin, which highlights the decanter’s distinctive shape. It too embodies the fusion between the creation and heritage of the House of Hennessy.

The Hennessy X.O “Masterpiece” and limited edition decanters by Kim Jones will be on sale at the Hennessy space at La Samaritaine on the 3rd floor and at the Hennessy boutique in Cognac, at prices of €25,000 and €255 respectively.
