The project of the first box of arts and crafts made in France was launched by six craftsmen-creators, all from Lorraine.
Two experts in ceramics, a cabinetmaker, a scenographer, a graphic designer, and a doctoral student in art have joined together in this project to propose the first box of art crafts. The project plans to deliver every two months of arts and crafts creations designed by the six meurthe-et-mosellans artisans and their guests.
Subscribers will thus receive, for 60€ per month, a box of arts and crafts that will appear every two months, like the beauty or grocery boxes offered by some brands, an initiative that is already very popular. The box will contain an original piece, limited to 200 copies, which pays its craftsman properly and offers the luxury of having the work of a craftsman delivered to your home.
The team says that nearly 70% of the price of the box will be invested in the purchase of the pieces from the craftsman. For the time being, the project is being financed through participatory financing.
The 6 experts in the field of arts and crafts are for the most part trained in the largest workshops such as Liffol-le-Grand, Vannes-le-Châtel, or Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye. Their mastery of the techniques specific to their fields and their artisanal know-how will thus be enhanced after the year 2020 marked by the closure of fairs and exhibitions, events that represent their main source of visibility.
“The aim was not to make money but to think, beyond the crisis, about how crafts can innovate to market themselves,” explains Sacha Tognolli, a cabinetmaker.
Christophe de Lavenne, the referent of the art crafts in the Grand Est region, goes on to explain that “for 2/3 of the art craftsmen, marketing depends on fairs, art markets or exhibitions. Since the beginning of the year, 87% of the exhibition places have had to be canceled. They hold because they did not choose these trades by chance and are passionate“.
Ceramist Camille Bo is expected to inaugurate the first box with one of her creations. She will be followed by cabinetmaker Sacha Tognolli, before making way for the first guest on this project, Angèle Paris. Other collaborations with guests are already planned for the following months, and the team specifies that the box will be delivered with a certificate of authenticity and numbering.
The design of the box will be imagined by set designer Morgane Degrelle, in collaboration with the team’s graphic designer, Thomas Oudin. The box will take the form of a drawer box, and will be manufactured by a local printer. The six young craftsmen are very attached to the ecological dimension of the project, and they are determined not to make a consumer product.
“The objects will be utilitarian and not only decorative. So that each object will find a place in our customers’ interiors, we have chosen to offer only functional objects“, comments Sacha Tognolli.
In addition to the box containing an art craft object every two months, the project also includes the provision of a booklet explaining the work of the creator. Subscribers will also be invited to exchange with the creator of the month during a video conference appointment. In order to support the work of small craftsmen in these difficult times, while remunerating them at the right price, this is happening here.
