While the 90th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will start tomorrow, Saturday, June 11, the American car manufacturer Cadillac took the opportunity to unveil images of its LMDh hybrid project, a race car that will enter competition at the 24 Hours of Daytona in January 2023.
After 20 years without participating in any competition, Cadillac finally returns and takes the opportunity to present its future prototype called “GTP Hypercar”. “Cadillac will once again compete on the world stage and we are all delighted to return to Le Mans twenty years later,” announced Rory Harvey, Cadillac’s vice president. “By racing in both IMSA and WEC, Cadillac has the opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities, expertise and technology,” he continued.
On the technical side, the Hypercar will be powered by a 5.5-liter V8 engine, coupled with the Williams electric system common to all competitors, giving it a total output of 680 horsepower.
Chris Mikalauskas, Cadillac’s lead exterior creative designer, provided further details on the upcoming car, “The Project GTP Hypercar is a unique convergence of form and function and exemplifies Cadillac’s future performance aesthetic. We have much more to reveal, from our next race car to the stunning shapes of our production vehicles” .
In addition, Cadillac opted for LMDh regulations and chose Italian race car maker Dallara to design the chassis, while remaining true to its own styling codes. Cadillac also decided to include a reference to the Spider that the brand entered in the 1950 Le Mans 24 Hours, with the discreet inscription “Le Monstre” .
The car will begin testing this month throughout the summer and will compete in its first race at the Rolex 24 at Daytona 2023 and a second one at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, no driver has yet been announced by the American manufacturer.
